The internet has become a hotbed of buzzwords like “functional” and “biohacking.” Detox is one of these trending words–but is it something we should be doing?

The short answer is YES… but it must be done safely.

Detoxing is the foundation for health in the modern world, but diving into it without understanding what’s going on inside the body during the process (and how to support it) is a good way to make yourself seriously ill. The good news is that there are MANY ways to support your body while detoxing so that it’s done as safely and efficiently as possible–and with a certified HMI health coach like yours truly, you’ll be guided by someone who’s successfully done it themselves, with lasting results and zero negative implications.

Let’s start by answering the why.

Why Do You Need to Detox Your Body?

Back in “the day” (in most places, that’s before the Green Revolution’s sweeping agricultural advancements of the 1940s–1960s were introduced to feed more people), when the soil was fertile and rich with minerals, the skies clear and the rivers clean, and relatively few man-made chemicals existed, our bodies were able to keep up with safely excreting the toxins we were exposed to in our everyday lives. Our bodies are designed to do this very effectively–through the six liver detox pathways and our kidneys, tongue, eyes, colon and skin.

When people say we don’t have to detox because our bodies already do it (“My Grandma Joan never had to do it, and she lived to be 90”), they’re partially correct: our bodies detoxify themselves. They’re just missing the context that we simply do not live in the same world anymore. Grandma Joan wasn’t exposed to nearly half of what you are today, and her food sources had considerably more nutrient density.

The Green Revolution successfully boosted food production globally but at an enormous cost: mass soil erosion, nutrient depletion, water pollution, and the overuse of pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers. This knowledge is critical to understanding why detoxing is ground zero for optimal health.

The Sheer Volume of Contaminants We’re Exposed to Are Overwhelming to the Body

The most crucial piece of this puzzle is the widespread contamination of our food and water sources, which overburden our organs of detoxification when indigested, inhaled or absorbed. Contaminants are now at levels previous generations can hardly fathom. According to the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, 85,000 chemicals are used in the United States alone, and ~2,500 new chemicals are introduced annually–almost all of which end up in our air, water, and soil. Through the manufacturing process, they also end up in our clothing, linens, furniture, vehicles, personal care products, laundry detergents and virtually anything else you can imagine.

Low-dose daily exposure over time can do a LOT of damage–and every human is at a varying degree of toxicity, depending on their lifestyle, history, stress levels, and geographic location (do you live close to an airport? Are planes constantly flying over your house? Do you live near farms with agricultural runoff? There are way more factors at play than you would think).

We Consume More Synthetic Drugs Than All Other Humans Before Us

Synthetic pharmaceuticals are extremely hard on the body to process, particularly the liver. They’re also made with fillers, additives, stabilizers, and heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. And if the body doesn’t have enough nutrients or energy to excrete these, it stores them in your fat cells as a temporary measure to keep you safe. (This is why I don’t recommend using beef tallow as a moisturizer–animals are exposed to many toxic substances that end up in their fat, which is then rubbed onto your skin, a porous and massive organ. Not worth it.)

Imagine this: you’re a human liver, performing over 500 essential functions, balancing hundreds of different plates in the air, and keeping the show on the road. Having to filter out toxic acetaminophen or SSRIs regularly at 100% capacity on top of everything else is not going to happen–so they end up stored in fatty tissue somewhere until the liver is given a BREAK, and a REAL chance to detox.

Also, anytime someone excretes synthetic drugs through their urine, or dumps pills into the toilet… you guessed it, it ends up in the water supply!

Our Food is Poor in Quality and Low in Nutrients

The extreme refinement of foods in the modern world has left us with considerably fewer nutrients essential to detox. Millions of people are eating lifeless food out of boxes with little to no fresh produce in their diet, and the produce they do consume is sprayed with pesticides and grown in depleted soil. This situation leaves them highly susceptible to toxin buildup, chronic illness, and extreme nutrient deficiency.

(Did you know that a whopping 68-80% of Americans are deficient in magnesium? This should be considered an urgent public health emergency.)

We Have a Chronic Stress Epidemic

From fast-paced life to childhood trauma and everything in between, many people are living in a state of high stress, their blood pumped full of cortisol on high alert for danger (whether it’s “real” or “perceived” doesn’t matter–the stress responses in the body is all the same).

Stress and unacknowledged/unhealed emotions are at the root of all illnesses. The idea of the mind and the body being separate is purely an illusion–the Reality is that they are intimately connected as one consciousness. Whatever mental and emotional stress we are experiencing is also happening in our bodies, and when the body is stressed, many of its functions are compromisedespecially detox pathways!
